Gamma Bowl III - October 3, 2009 By Bob Olson, Special Correspondent for the Procyon Herald
Planet Crete, Omicron Gamma.
"Shoot to kill," I thought, "and don't miss." That about summed up Gamma Bowl III, as two guns-only fighters sailed through to a nail-biting finale, despite a well-stacked field of twelve contestants of the twenty-five players logged on Procyon. This event also marked the first time that the much-vaunted ProcyonHook was mandated for all the participants.
The Zombies, Wraith Squadron, and the Avid Tokers were among the most recognizable clans present. The Sores, Clan 01, and The Org all fielded representatives; Ashigaru and ShadowLuna both participated as well, although I did not get their clan affiliations.
Cold Sore and Wolfgang Zombie started off the festivities, matching up in a quick match which saw Cold Sore triumphing over Wolfgang Zombie despite massive lag. Admin Sion warned Cold Sore that unless conditions improved, Cold Sore would forfeit. Round 2 started with Wolfgang suddenly disappearing as Cold Sore's ship leaped around, and Cold Sore conceding the forfeit.
Cheech and John Madden matched up next. The Toker and the Org went at it with gusto, with Madden getting the early advantage, knocking down Cheech's shield and half his hull with little damage in return. Cheech rallied to smoke Madden, winning the first round of the match. More alertly in the second round, both Cheech and Madden took down each other's shields, but Madden's Cannonball blows up prematurely in his face, courtesy of a well-timed cruise disruptor by Cheech, ending the match with a victory for Cheech.
Haze and Furby were third up. Haze, also known as Avid Toker Chong, wasted no time in taking down Wraith Furby's shield, setting up yet another suicide by missile with a well-timed CD. In the second round, Furby quickly lost his shield initially, but rallied to return the favor, nearly destroying Haze before again doing a missile-based self-destruct. Haze proclaims "Guns-Only Will Prevail!"
DarkMatter Zombie took up the mantle next, showing Wraith Carburetor that he was on a no-Carb diet as the Zombie declined to dine on the resulting brains feast, as Carb fails to score more than an incidental hit in return. In the second round, Carb does much better, but in that much longer duel it's DMZ who blows out the Carb.
Wolfgang Zombie returns to take on ShadowLuna, quickly reducing the Lunar Shield then hull. In the second round, Luna scores on Wolfgang, but then gets skewered in turn by the hungry Zombie.
In the vaunted Man against Machine match-up, Cheech returned to take on 1011 of Clan 01. Demonstrating that guns don't kill folks, mines do... as 1011 found out the hard way. Round 2 lasted longer, as Cheech and 1011 engaged in a stop-and-start furball that left Cheech's Sabre somewhat scratched and scored as 1011's ship got recycled.
Ashigaru! next came up to face the Avid Toker Haze, only to be confounded by the errant smoke as Haze took the first round. In the next round, both hulls go critical before Ash gets in the final shot. The tiebreaker was an intense duel, but in the end Ash found his way through the Haze to emerge victorious.
The sole surviving Wraith contestant, Colonel Jade, was next up against the red-hot DarkMatter Zombie. The Troutmaster fed the Zombie repeatedly, barely hitting DMZ in the second round during the five passes it took for DarkMatter to defeat him.
For the first of Semi-Final Round matchups, DarkMatter faced Cheech, taking Cheech in the first round in a tense, down to the wire fight where DarkMatter landed the last shot. In the second round, Cheech and DarkMatter engage in a more traditional seven-pass battle, before Cheech is able to return the favor. In the tiebreaker, Cheech quickly gets the upper hand, taking out DMZ's shield, and then hull, for the win.
Wolfgang Zombie returned to face Ashigaru! where Ash demonstrated the perils of cooling off on the sidelines, taking Wolf in 6 passes. In the next round, Wolfgang rallies by tying Ash into a furball before finishing him in turn. The tiebreaker sees Ash go up in smoke against a mine and gun-pass combination by Wolfgang.
Wolfgang Zombie squares off against Cheech for the Finals. Cheech quickly knocks out Wolfgang's shields, but Wolfgang takes out Cheech anyway. In the second round, Cheech takes down Wolf's shields, and wears out his hull in a furball lasting nearly two minutes.
With a cry of "BraiNzZZ!", Wolfgang rallies for the tiebreaker, but as Cheech spins his Guns-Only Sabre in place against the quickly turning Guns-Only Eagle Wolfgang is flying, the mines fly wildly as the gunfire lands precisely, almost surgically, as Wolfgang goes down in flames.
Wolfgang's comment, "You've got to wasp those Sabres to win," was all he would say afterwards.
Sion awarded the first prize to Cheech, as well as the custom lights package. Cheech announced he'll be getting something "Green", as Cheech went on to win his second Gamma Bowl title.
Wolfgang Zombie got second prize, choosing the complete set of navigational maps. Merchants beware!
Sion announced a tie for third prize between Ashigaru! and DarkMatter Zombie, who both were awarded Neutral Reputations.
The after-party free-for-all was most memorable, although the loss of brains to Zombie and Toker smoke left many recollections somewhat tattered. Many thanks to Sion and all the Admins for running the event and putting up all the prizes.
Sion concluded with an announcement of another Procyon Server Event, date to be determined, of a new race: The Toledo Run, from Planet Manhattan in New York, to Planet Toledo in Omicron Minor. Of course, only those with ProcyonHook will be able to run, but Sion noted that racing may not be on everyone's agenda during that race... recalling Brigantine's CAPT famous scam during The Malta Dash.

 | Ravenwood on 10-04-2009 17:09:31 | | | Nice work Olson! | | | | |
 | Jade on 10-04-2009 17:29:35 | | | Very nice work! One note though... Furby doesn't have a missile. Both self-kills were from mines. | | | | |
 | Bob Olson on 10-04-2009 20:26:10 | | | The death message said something about Furby killing himself, each time. I thought a death by self-mining generated a different message... | | | | |
 | Cheech on 10-05-2009 01:20:05 | | | Great read. Only thing I can say was it was not a cruise disruptor but a mine that the cannonball exploded on in the duel with Madden. See everyone at the race! | | | | |
 | Carb on 10-05-2009 03:13:53 | | | No Furby wouldn't touch a missile with a ten foot pole... | | | | |
 | Ant on 10-08-2009 16:35:01 | | | Nope, Furby has Carb to do all the missile work for him hehehe..... *pokes Carb* :P | | | | |
 | Jade on 10-08-2009 19:02:28 | | | Carb does enough missile work for the entire Wraith clan. =P Maybe even the server... | | | | |
